What is PEMF / Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy?

What is PEMF  – Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy – Poor cellular function and metabolism can contribute to a variety of disease and healing is much more difficult if your cells are not functioning in an optimal fashion. Practitioners, including acupuncturists, have been using technology called pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) to potentially mitigate cellular dysfunction. In Europe, PEMF therapy has been used for two decades. The value of PEMF has been shown to cover a wide arrange of conditions with well documented trials carried out by hospitals, researchers, and others in the medical community.

Why Electromagnetic Fields? – At the cellular level our bodies used electromagnetic signals to transmit information to and from the brain and organs. Within our cells, biochemical processes are controlled by electromagnetic reactions that are occurring all the time. This field can be disrupted (through exposure to negative electromagnetic fields (think cell phones, computers) or enhanced by using the PEMF, increasing potentially overall health.  PEMF uses electrical energy to direct series of magnetic pulses through injured or painful tissue where each magnetic pulse induces a tiny electrical signal that stimulates  cellular repair by enhancing the up take of oxygen, and transport of IONS across cell membranes.

What can PEMF do for me? – PEMF does not treat medical conditions directly.  Rather PEMF up-regulates your body’s own ability to heal itself naturally by replenishing the natural charge that exists in healthy cells. Improvements may be seen in:

  • Stimulated cellular repair and healing
  • Increased energy
  • Improved blood oxygenation and circulation
  • Lower blood pressure by relaxing vessels
  • Better sleep quality and stress reduction
  • Detoxification by increasing water exchange
  • Enhanced bone healing
  • Suppressed arthritis pain and heat
  • Reduction in overall pain levels
  • Acute (trauma)injury healing
  • Reduction in wrinkles
  • Increased mental focus
  • Reduction in depressing
  • Post surgical tissue repair
  • Athletic recovery

 Are there side effects?

Most patients experience none or few side effects.  In some cases patients may experience mild discomfort, but this discomfort is temporary and fades when the PEMF is discontinued.  There are several ways in which the PEMF device can be adjusted for individual patients.  Patients may experience a drop in pressure and heart rate.

PEMF Safety and Contraindications – Do not use if you have,

  • Pacemaker
  • Cochlear implants
  • Intrathecal pumps
  • Heavy menstruation or active other bleeding
  • Pregnancy
  • Organ transplant patients with immunosuppression drugs
